Giving stop smoking advice with smear tests could save extra lives

Giving women who smoke advice on quitting when they go for cervical smear tests could be an effective way of saving even more lives - according to new research published today in the British Journal of Cancer (vol 96, issue 7, pp 1057-1061). If introduced, the measure could benefit hundreds of thousands of women every year.

The study, funded by Cancer Research UK and the NHS Cancer Screening Programmes, found that brief stop smoking advice, given by trained practice nurses as part of routine cervical screening, increased women's intention to quit. Previous research shows that increased intention to quit is a good indicator that people actually will.

Smoking is a well known cause of lung cancer and other life-threatening diseases. But it also doubles a woman's chances of developing cervical cancer. Women who smoke are more likely to have abnormal smears, and the pre-cancerous cell changes associated with these are less likely to respond to treatment.

Snooki gives Duchess of Cambridge baby advice

Snooki gives Duchess of Cambridge baby advice

Snooki has advised the Duchess of Cambridge to apply her make-up after she gives birth.
The former 'Jersey Shore' star - who has a 10-month-old son Lorenzo with her fiance Jionni LaValle - thinks Duchess Catherine, who is heavily pregnant with her first child, should maintain her glamorous image even if she has no energy.
The 25-year-old reality TV star told YourTango.com: 'In the beginning right when you take your royal golden nugget home to the castle it is the most exciting experience of your life. I couldn't wait to wake up in the middle of the night to take care of my little prince Lorenzo. But that lasts for about a few days, then it's like 'I love you but OMG stop crying I'm exhausted.'
'The lack of sleep you will get used to, just do your make-up, put a tiara on you'll look beautiful as usual.'
She also advised the Duchess: 'Be sure to sing to your baby a lot! When I sing to my booger he calms down and stares at me like he's in love which makes me feel amazing, or he's just trying to tell me to shut the hell up because I can't sing. Anyway, music calms them down. I'm pretty sure you can have anyone you want over to sing to your little one.... maybe a lullaby from Elton John?'
