Gypsy Taub stood on a chair to announce her upcoming wedding Sunday and got herself arrested, cuffed and put into a police van for it.
What brought the trouble was that Taub was wearing only a bullhorn at the time, and her fiance, Jaymz Smith, was wearing less than that. A small crowd fell in behind to harangue the arresting officers for their insensitivity to such a romantic occasion, but Taub did not seem to mind. That's what she was there for.
A Russian-born emigre by way of Hungary, who describes herself as a "Russian-style revolutionary," Taub is the public face of public nudity in San Francisco. The wedding shower was just a teaser for the Berkeley resident's latest protest against the San Francisco nudity ban put into law Feb. 1. "I always wanted to be free from body shame from the time I was a child," she said.
Taub, who was born Oxana Chornenky, and three other body freedom activists got themselves arrested that day in front of City Hall, and convicted for violating the ordinance. Taub appealed her conviction and appeared before a three-judge panel on Friday. Before the court's decision was even rendered, Taub had organized Sunday's protest against it. When the presiding judge adjourned the court in order to begin deliberations, she asked if she could make a statement.
"They said no, so I started yelling at them," said Taub. She was still in a yelling mood when she arrived for Sunday's protest at Jane Warner Plaza, the parklet where the F-Market Muni streetcar makes its turnaround, at Market and Castro streets.
Taub, 44, arrived clothed and followed by her three children and new fiance Smith, 20, who described his occupation as "a traveler." Asked how they met, he said, "I ran into her in Montana at the Rainbow Gathering."
Taub is at ease standing around naked as the only woman among men. She used to work in a strip joint in Boston. But this was the first time for Smith, who admitted to being "a little nervous." He was game, but the kids were not. When her daughter Inti Gonzalez, 13, was asked if she would be taking her clothes off, she answered "no," without giving it a thought. Asked why not, she replied, "Uh, I don't want to."
A crowd gathered, including three or four men who can always be found sunbathing while wearing nothing but crude codpieces at the park. Most everybody else there had a camera, and right away Taub stripped off her top to be interviewed by a German film crew here to make a documentary called "Nudism."
Four officers stood off to the side under the command of Sgt. Martha Juarez, who said as soon as genitals were revealed, they would be in violation of the ordinance and subject to arrest.
When the moment came, Taub stripped off shoes, socks and two layers of undergarments that included a crude codpiece of her own. Smith stood around looking as if he would prefer to be somewhere else, but when Taub peeled down her final layer and started the rally, he dropped his pants and proudly took a chair of his own.
"I am Gypsy Taub," her speech began. "You can watch my TV series called 'My Naked Truth' on Channel 29 on Saturdays at 10 p.m."
Standing in support of the couple were three mostly naked men, plus a fourth in a loincloth who looked as if he couldn't get out of his chair.
"Put some f- clothes on," yelled a motorist coming down Market.
Taub announced that "if I get arrested today, I could go to jail for a year," but the cops held back, allowing Taub to make her speech, which went on and on. Three times the rally had to be interrupted so the streetcar could make its turn to begin the run.
When the arrest was made, several protesters tried to shame the arresting officers and otherwise make a spectacle of it. These did not include Taub's three children, who stayed where they were, nonplussed by it all.
The last time Taub was put into the back of a police wagon, she demanded a blanket, not to cover up with but to sit on. "I wasn't going to sit naked on that dirty bench," she said.
The arrest was made, after she declined an offer to cover up, but she did not go to jail for a year or even a day. Since it was a violation of a city ordinance, not a penal code, she was cited and released.
The naked wedding will go on as planned, at noon Dec. 19 on the steps of City Hall. Everyone is invited.
